Hopi Sand Clan Mother Roanna Jackson at
the foot of Walpi, the First Mesa on 12 November 2011.
The night before on 11/11/11, the Moon was one day beyond full.
We walked the First Mesa, the ancient Street of Walpi, bathed in its glow.
The homes have been built into the stone, & many have been occupied by the same families since 900 A.D. Roanna guided us to her home on the Mesa. There she prays daily, hours at a time. She prays for humanity.
She passes on what she has learned to her children. Together, we ground Hopi
corn into meal for ceremony, and prayed. This photo is taken as Roanna offers corn to the Elders, Mother Earth, and the Ancestors.
She indicates off into the distance where the Ancients first emerged from the below the earth. Later, along
with Christopher O’Brien, & Zuni Elder Clifford Mahooty we would visit Grandfather Martin Gashweseoma in Hotevilla.
There we sat in circle, and received a blessing from the 92-year-old guardian of the sacred stone tablets of the Fire Clan & the last Hopi Elder still alive from the group who visited the United Nations to deliver their messages, predictions, & warnings for the future. We used some of that same corn we ground the night before for ceremony.
Then the crew visited Prophecy Rock. If I close my eyes, I can still taste
the red clay in the air; the ancient whispers of the ancestors echoing through the mesas; and sense my feet planted firmly on Hopi ground.
